Barrister Aloy Ejimakor, special counsel to detained IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu, has declared that Kanu’s continued imprisonment could play a decisive role in Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, particularly in the South-East.
In a statement shared Tuesday via his verified X (formerly Twitter) handle, Ejimakor insisted that Kanu remains a dominant political concern among the Igbo populace, warning that politicians in the region may either rise or fall at the polls depending on their position regarding the IPOB leader’s incarceration.
“For Ndigbo, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is the main issue and will remain so until sound justice is done,” Ejimakor wrote.
He further stressed that regardless of differing opinions, Kanu’s imprisonment would have far-reaching electoral implications across the South-East.
“Whether you admit it or not, his incarceration will significantly affect the general elections, especially in the South-East, where mighty politicians will fall or rise on account of it,” he added.
Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), was sentenced to life imprisonment on November 22, 2025, by Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja. The court convicted him on multiple terrorism-related charges.
He received life sentences on counts 1, 4, 5, and 6. Additionally, the court imposed a 20-year prison term without the option of a fine on count 7, alongside another five-year term without the option of a fine on a separate count.
In delivering judgment, the court described the offences as terrorism-related and referenced what it termed “atrocious” actions. It also observed that Kanu’s conduct during proceedings reinforced its position regarding his alleged propensity for violence.
Political analysts believe the development may further deepen political divisions in the South-East as preparations gradually begin for the 2027 electoral cycle.
