The Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) has announced the killing of Mohammed Odeh, identified as the head of Hamas’ military intelligence headquarters, in a targeted strike carried out in northern Gaza.
In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), the IDF confirmed the operation, describing it as part of ongoing military actions against Hamas leadership structures.
“Eliminated: Mohammed Odeh – Head of Hamas’ Military Wing in a strike in northern Gaza,” the military stated.
According to the Israeli military, Odeh assumed his position following the earlier killing of Izz al-Din al-Haddad and was allegedly involved in coordinating operational planning linked to the October 7, 2023 attacks on Israel.
The IDF further claimed that Odeh played a central role in planning and coordinating infiltration operations and targeting strategies during the assault that triggered the ongoing war in Gaza.
The statement also listed other senior Hamas figures it says were killed during the broader military campaign, including Mohammed Deif, described as the head of Hamas’ military wing; Huthayfa Abu Obeida, a spokesperson and propaganda chief; and Rafa’a Salameh, commander of the Khan Yunis Brigade.
The announcement comes amid continued hostilities between Israel and Hamas following the October 7 attacks, which resulted in the deaths of approximately 1,200 people in Israel and the abduction of hundreds, according to Israeli authorities.
In response, Israel launched a sustained military offensive in Gaza involving air and ground operations, which has resulted in widespread destruction and a high civilian death toll, according to Palestinian health authorities.
The conflict has also triggered a broader regional escalation, with clashes involving Iran-backed groups across Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, and Yemen.
International mediators, including Egypt, Qatar, and the United States, have repeatedly attempted to broker ceasefire agreements and hostage exchanges, though these efforts have largely resulted in only temporary pauses in fighting.
The latest Israeli claim further intensifies the ongoing war, which continues to draw global concern over humanitarian conditions and civilian casualties in the Gaza Strip.
