Former Labour Party vice-presidential candidate, , has stirred controversy after claiming that Islam is facing reputational damage under the administration of President and Vice President .
Speaking at a political gathering organised by the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), Baba-Ahmed said the current leadership has, in his view, negatively impacted the global perception of Islam.
“The world of Islam has never suffered reputational damage as under the Tinubu-Shettima presidency,” he stated, acknowledging that his remarks were difficult but necessary.
He clarified that his comments were not intended to promote religious division, but rather to emphasise the need for sincerity and integrity in leadership.
“If you are presenting religion, then present genuine candidates,” he said. “If you bring a Christian, let it be a genuine one. If you bring a Muslim, let it be a genuine one.”
The remarks come amid ongoing national conversations around governance, representation, and the role of religion in Nigeria’s political landscape.
Meanwhile, the (MURIC) has also criticised the Federal Government over what it described as “preferential treatment” in public projects.
The group raised concerns over the reported construction of a ₦25 billion ecumenical chapel and pilgrimage centre at the in Abuja, questioning the fairness of resource allocation.
MURIC’s Executive Director, , said the development has triggered widespread debate within Muslim communities, with many calling for equal consideration in government initiatives.
He also urged authorities to clarify the criteria for project distribution, warning that perceived imbalance could deepen religious tensions.
