Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Olatunji Disu has called on officers of the Nigeria Police Force to prepare for the proposed establishment of state police, stating that the Federal Government has taken a firm decision to move forward with the reform.
Speaking at the opening of a one-day workshop on state policing, the IGP described the initiative as one of the most significant security reforms in Nigeria’s history, noting that its success would have far-reaching implications for the country’s security architecture.
Disu urged senior police officers to fully understand the objectives of the proposed system so they can educate personnel under their command and address concerns surrounding the reform.
According to him, many officers still have questions about state policing, making it necessary for police leadership to provide clear information and guidance.
The IGP stressed that the reform is a national initiative driven by the Federal Government and should not be viewed as a project of the Nigeria Police Force alone.
He disclosed that extensive consultations, constitutional discussions, and committee deliberations have already taken place, with a comprehensive implementation framework currently being refined.
Disu revealed that the police committee developed its initial framework within just 17 days, adding that the document is now contributing significantly to ongoing national discussions on state policing.
He also noted that retired Inspectors-General of Police have offered recommendations to strengthen the framework, while comparative studies of policing systems in countries such as the United States, India, and Pakistan were conducted to guide Nigeria’s approach.
The IGP encouraged participants at the workshop to actively contribute ideas and recommendations that would help shape a policing system capable of addressing Nigeria’s evolving security challenges.
He concluded by urging officers to embrace the reform process, saying their input would play a vital role in building an effective and modern policing structure for the country.
