The Idoma Association USA (IAUSA) has called for urgent international attention over the worsening security situation in Benue State, announcing plans to petition United States President Donald Trump and seek engagement with members of the US Congress over ongoing killings and displacement in Idoma communities.
The decision was reached during the association’s 30th Annual Convention held in Virginia Beach, Virginia, where delegates, traditional leaders, government representatives and members of the Idoma diaspora gathered under the theme, “Building Unity Through Accountability.”
In a communiqué issued after the convention, IAUSA expressed deep concern over continued violence in Benue South and other parts of the state, warning that repeated loss of lives and displacement of residents must not become accepted as normal.
The association urged the Nigerian government, Benue State authorities and security agencies to take stronger and sustained measures to protect citizens, restore peace and address the humanitarian challenges affecting affected communities.
IAUSA said it would formally write to President Donald Trump, drawing attention to what it described as the security crisis, humanitarian difficulties and displacement facing people in Benue South, while requesting greater international support.
The group also revealed plans to pursue diplomatic engagements aimed at securing an opportunity for the Och’Idoma V, His Royal Majesty Agaba’Idu John Elaigwu Odogbo Obagaji, to present the concerns of the Idoma people before relevant committees and lawmakers at the United States Congress.
According to the association, its advocacy efforts will extend beyond the US government to include international organisations, human rights groups, policymakers and global media platforms.
IAUSA further announced plans for a medical outreach programme across Idoma communities in December 2026, where healthcare professionals from the diaspora will provide free medical consultations, medicines and health education to underserved communities.
The association stressed that advocacy must be combined with practical interventions that improve the lives of people at home.
Ahead of future elections, IAUSA also called on residents of Benue South to prioritise integrity, competence and accountability when choosing leaders, urging voters to look beyond ethnic loyalty, political affiliation and financial inducements.
The group reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the development of Idoma land through initiatives focused on healthcare, education, youth empowerment, entrepreneurship and cultural preservation.
IAUSA concluded that the true impact of its convention would not be measured by speeches made abroad, but by the actions taken to promote security, development and a better future for the Idoma people.
