French authorities have arrested a woman in her 50s after the bodies of two newborn babies were discovered hidden inside a freezer at a residence in eastern France, in a shocking case that has stunned the local community.
According to investigators, the grim discovery was made in the small town of Aillevillers-et-Lyaumont in Haute-Saône after a man contacted police on Tuesday when he found the remains of a newborn inside a freezer at his home. A further search by forensic officers later uncovered the body of a second infant stored in another bag within the same appliance.
The woman, who is believed to have left the home in December, was tracked down by police to Boulogne-Billancourt in the Paris region, nearly 300 kilometres away. She was arrested Tuesday night and transported back to Haute-Saône, where she is now in custody on suspicion of killing the infants.
Besançon prosecutor Cédric Logelin confirmed that during questioning, the suspect admitted she was the mother of the two babies and said she placed their bodies in the freezer shortly after giving birth alone at home. Investigators say she allegedly concealed her pregnancies from people around her.
Authorities believe the births occurred at different times between 2011 and 2018, though the woman reportedly could not provide exact dates.
Police initially questioned the homeowner, who discovered the first body, but later shifted focus to his partner — the arrested woman — who reportedly has nine children from previous relationships.
The shocking discovery has sent waves of fear and disbelief through the quiet town of fewer than 1,500 residents. Local mayor Jean-Claude Tramesel said he was notified by authorities Tuesday evening and described the situation as deeply disturbing for the community.
French authorities have launched a full investigation to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the deaths as forensic examinations continue.
