A Senior Special Assistant to the Niger State Governor, Bashir A. Shaba, has resigned from his position, citing deep dissatisfaction with the direction of governance and political developments in Niger State and Nigeria at large.
Shaba, who served under Governor Mohammed Umar Bago, announced his resignation in a letter made available on Wednesday, saying the decision followed “careful reflection, wide consultation, and sincere self-examination.”
According to him, continuing in government had become incompatible with his personal convictions and vision for public service.
“After careful reflection, wide consultation, and sincere self-examination, I have reached the conclusion that I can no longer continue in this role,” Shaba said.
“My resignation is borne out of growing dissatisfaction with the prevailing political developments and governance direction in Niger State and Nigeria at large, which no longer align with my personal convictions, principles, and vision for genuine public service.”
He described politics as a platform that must prioritize service, accountability, and people-focused leadership, stressing that integrity must guide difficult decisions.
“Politics, for me, must remain a tool for service, accountability, and people-centered leadership. When personal conscience and political reality no longer align, integrity demands a clear decision,” he stated.
In a significant political move, Shaba also announced his exit from the All Progressives Congress (APC), revealing that he has joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC), which he described as a more credible alternative.
“Consequently, I have also taken the decision to terminate my membership of the All Progressives Congress (APC). Going forward, I have chosen to align with the African Democratic Congress (ADC), a coalition I believe offers a more credible platform to pursue good governance, accountability, inclusiveness, and a people-driven political future for our state and country,” he said.
Shaba was quick to dismiss speculations of personal conflict within the government, insisting that his decision was not motivated by bitterness or animosity.
“This decision is not driven by personal animosity or bitterness toward the Governor or members of the administration. I continue to hold His Excellency and the office he occupies in high regard and sincerely wish the Niger State Government success,” he added.
He described his resignation as the beginning of a new phase in his political journey, guided by conscience and commitment to the people.
“This step represents a new chapter, guided by conscience, courage, and commitment to the people,” Shaba said.
Concluding, the former governor’s aide reaffirmed his resolve to remain active in public life and contribute meaningfully to Nigeria’s political development.
“I remain steadfast in my resolve to contribute positively to the political development of Niger State and Nigeria, wherever principle, integrity, and the people’s interest are truly respected. History will always favour those who stand for what they believe is right,” he concluded.
