The Peoples Democratic Party has alleged widespread intimidation, security interference, and electoral malpractice during the February 21 Area Council elections held in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
In a statement released Sunday by its National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, the party described the polls as deeply flawed, claiming they were conducted under troubling conditions marked by abuse of power and manipulation.
According to the party’s National Working Committee, the PDP’s performance at the polls came despite what it called “unprecedented intimidation, high-powered money politics, and brazen executive brigandage” across several polling units.
The party further alleged direct involvement of security personnel in disrupting the electoral process. It claimed that reports and video evidence show armed operatives carting away result sheets, intimidating voters, and influencing outcomes in some locations.
Despite the complaints, the PDP congratulated candidates declared winners by the Independent National Electoral Commission, including the Chairman-elect of Gwagwalada Area Council, Mohammed Kasim, along with successful councillorship candidates.
At the same time, the party announced the formation of a special legal team led by its National Legal Adviser, Shafi Bara’u, to handle election petitions and support aggrieved candidates seeking redress in court.
The PDP urged affected candidates to act quickly, warning that delays could jeopardize their chances of successfully challenging disputed results.
Beyond immediate grievances, the party linked low voter turnout to growing public distrust in Nigeria’s electoral system. It argued that voter apathy reflects declining confidence in outcomes under the Electoral Act 2026.
The opposition party warned that the FCT council polls may signal deeper challenges ahead of the 2027 general elections if urgent reforms are not implemented.
It also called on the National Assembly and the presidency to take immediate legislative and executive action to strengthen electoral credibility and restore public confidence in the democratic process.
The controversy surrounding the FCT elections continues to grow, as opposition parties and civil society groups raise concerns over alleged vote-buying, irregularities, and low participation across parts of Abuja.
