Islamic cleric Sheikh Yahya Jingir has renewed his support for Muslim-Muslim political tickets in Nigeria, urging Muslims in Kano State to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) and actively participate in future elections.
Jingir made the remarks at a political gathering organised in support of Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf under the theme “Abba Go Again.” Governor Yusuf was reportedly present at the event.
Speaking in Hausa, the cleric praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for supporting a Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket and said he remained a strong advocate of the political arrangement.
Jingir urged his audience to support candidates running on Muslim-Muslim tickets, while acknowledging that the idea has faced opposition from Christians and members of other religious groups.
He questioned whether advocating for a Muslim-Muslim ticket amounted to wrongdoing, arguing that people of other faiths were also free to express and promote their political preferences.
The cleric reiterated his position, saying he would continue to support Muslim-Muslim candidates and urged his followers to do the same.
Jingir also encouraged those present to prepare for upcoming elections by obtaining their voter cards. He claimed that Muslims constitute a larger voting population in Nigeria than Christians, a position he used to encourage his audience to participate actively in elections.
He also linked his previous political stance to the electoral performance of candidates who opposed the Muslim-Muslim ticket, claiming that his position contributed to their defeat in the polls.
The cleric subsequently declared his support for Muslim-Muslim candidates and asked members of the Muslim community at the gathering to support the same political arrangement.
During his speech, Jingir also made an allegation concerning the Maitatsine movement, claiming that individuals associated with the movement were responsible for an attack on a mosque in Kano and alleging that they were Christians in disguise. The claim was made during his address and has not been independently established.
The Maitatsine movement was a radical Islamic movement that emerged in northern Nigeria decades ago and was associated with violent religious disturbances, particularly during the 1980s.
Jingir further praised what he described as a government that promotes family values and made claims about conversions to Islam in the United States.
His comments come amid continuing political debates over religion, representation and power-sharing in Nigeria as political activities gradually intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections.
