A prominent Yoruba coalition, the Mẹkunnu Koya Political Bureau, has issued a passionate call for unity among major Yoruba self-determination and security groups, warning that growing insecurity and internal divisions could threaten the future of Yorubaland.
In an open letter released on Monday, the group appealed to organisations including the Oodua People’s Congress (OPC), Agbekoya, Oodua Youth Movement (OYM), Oodua Liberation Movement (OLM), Yoruba Revolutionary Movement (YOREM), Federation of Yoruba Consciousness and Culture (FYCC), and several other Yoruba advocacy groups to set aside differences and work together for the protection of the region.
The coalition said the current security challenges facing the South-West require urgent collective action rather than organisational rivalry or personal interests.
According to the statement, Yoruba communities are increasingly confronted with insecurity, violence, displacement, and fears that political leaders have failed to adequately protect lives and property.
“For decades, our mission has been clear — to defend our land, protect our people, resist oppression, and ensure that future generations inherit a homeland that is secure, prosperous, and free from fear,” the group stated.
The Bureau acknowledged the sacrifices made by generations of Yoruba activists and self-determination advocates, noting that many suffered imprisonment, financial hardship, and even death while fighting for the interests of their people.
It warned that allowing divisions among Yoruba organisations at this critical period could weaken efforts to address growing threats facing the region.
“At this critical moment, division among those who claim to defend Yoruba interests is a luxury we can no longer afford,” the statement declared.
Referencing the words of renowned anti-colonial thinker Frantz Fanon, the coalition urged Yoruba leaders and organisations to embrace unity and responsibility.
The group stressed that the defence of Yorubaland should not be left solely to established organisations but must involve every Yoruba son and daughter committed to the region’s safety and progress.
Calling for renewed commitment, the Bureau urged community leaders, youth groups, traditional institutions, and self-determination movements to close ranks and place the welfare of the people above individual ambitions.
“This is not the time for factional disputes. This is not the time for organisational rivalry. This is not the time for personal ambition. This is the time for unity, vigilance, mobilisation, and collective action,” the statement added.
The coalition further warned that speeches and declarations alone would not solve the challenges confronting the region, insisting that only discipline, organisation, accountability, and genuine unity can guarantee a secure future for Yorubaland.
Ending its message with a rallying call, the group declared that history would judge the current generation by how it responds to the challenges facing the Yoruba nation.
“The hour is late. The task is urgent. The responsibility is ours. Let history record that when Yorubaland called, we answered,” the statement concluded.
