South Africa’s Department of Home Affairs has dismissed as false a widely circulated social media notice claiming that members of the public would receive R250 for every undocumented foreign national they report to authorities.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the department described the notice as fraudulent, stressing that it was not issued by the Department of Home Affairs or the Minister of Home Affairs.
“The notice currently circulating is fake and did not originate from the Department of Home Affairs. Neither the Department nor the Minister offers monetary rewards for reporting undocumented foreign nationals,” the statement said.
The department urged citizens to verify information through its official communication channels before sharing it online, warning that the spread of false information could mislead the public and create unnecessary tension.
The fake notice, which carried the official logo of the Department of Home Affairs, falsely claimed that anyone who “catches and brings an illegal foreign national” to authorities would receive R250 per person. It also included a fake reporting address, making it appear authentic.
Authorities have warned the public not to rely on or circulate the misleading notice, emphasizing that it has no connection to the government.
The Department of Home Affairs encouraged South Africans to promote responsible engagement and respect for the rule of law by relying only on verified government announcements.
The clarification comes just days before the June 30 deadline announced by the anti-immigration group March and March and allied organisations, which have called on undocumented migrants to leave South Africa.
The government has not endorsed the group’s campaign and has reiterated that all immigration matters will continue to be handled strictly in accordance with the country’s laws and official procedures.
