LAGOS — A Nigerian soldier has allegedly shot dead a National Diploma II student of Yaba College of Technology, Balogun Sultan, during a security operation in the Yaba area of Lagos.
SUNTV Global Channel gathered that the tragic incident occurred on Tuesday shortly after the deceased completed his examination.
Sultan, who was enrolled in the institution’s distance learning programme, had reportedly stayed back briefly with classmates to submit an assignment in Research Methods before setting out for home. What should have been a routine journey reportedly ended in chaos.
According to fellow students, those in the distance learning programme only come to campus for physical lectures ahead of examinations and return solely for exams.
“We only come to school for examinations as our course is usually online. Before examinations, we would have two weeks of physical lectures. Once we are done with the examination, we do not come to school again,” a classmate told SUNTV Global Channel.
Eyewitness accounts indicate that Sultan was heading toward the WAEC bus stop, a busy transit point near the office of the West African Examinations Council, where he would typically board a vehicle en route to Lagos Island.
Sources said soldiers had reportedly been deployed to the area following intelligence about a possible cult clash. During the operation, gunshots rang out, sending commuters and students scrambling for safety.
“Soldiers came to quell a reported cult clash in the area. Unfortunately, Balogun was on his way home at the same time and was hit by bullets allegedly fired during the operation,” a source disclosed.
Witnesses described scenes of panic and confusion, with residents and students fleeing for cover. A video obtained by SUNTV Global Channel showed the victim lying in a pool of blood as bystanders attempted to stop the bleeding while calling for urgent medical help.
Sultan was rushed to the Military Hospital, Yaba, where doctors reportedly carried out emergency chest surgery in an effort to save his life. Despite medical intervention, he later succumbed to his injuries.
Friends and classmates have described the late student as calm, focused, and non-confrontational.
“He was just a quiet guy trying to finish school and go home,” one friend said. “Now his parents will never see him walk through their door again.”
The incident has plunged the campus community into mourning, with students expressing grief, anger, and fear over the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
As of the time of filing this report, there has been no official statement from the Nigerian Army regarding the incident.
