Fresh cracks have emerged within Nigeria’s opposition bloc as and are reportedly set to exit the (ADC) following the breakdown of coalition talks ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Multiple insider sources reveal that both political heavyweights have intensified consultations and are now considering a move to a new political platform, after disagreements over strategy and leadership within the coalition arrangement.
The development comes just months after Obi and Kwankwaso aligned with the ADC as part of a broader opposition effort to form a united front against the ruling party. However, that alliance now appears to be unraveling.
Their reported absence from key ADC meetings has fueled speculation of an imminent defection, especially as political parties begin preparations for primary elections.
At the heart of the crisis is disagreement over the outcome of the Ibadan coalition meeting, where leaders from several opposition parties agreed in principle to present a single presidential candidate in 2027. Both Obi and Kwankwaso are said to be dissatisfied with the process for selecting that candidate, raising concerns about transparency and fairness.
Confirming the development, the spokesperson of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, Habibu Mohammed, disclosed that the decision to leave the ADC has effectively been finalized following a high-level stakeholders’ meeting in Kano.
According to him, representatives from across the state unanimously backed the move, citing the party’s internal legal battles and uncertainty as major risks.
He described the ADC’s situation as “too murky for comfort,” noting that ongoing court cases and leadership disputes could drag on and jeopardize political timelines—particularly with deadlines set by the (INEC) fast approaching.
Sources indicate that discussions with another platform—believed to be nearing completion—are already at an advanced stage, with formal defection expected within days.
The crisis deepened after a recent Supreme Court decision failed to resolve the ADC’s leadership tussle, instead returning the matter to a lower court, prolonging uncertainty within the party.
Political analysts say the potential exit of Obi and Kwankwaso could deal a major blow to opposition unity efforts, raising fresh concerns about fragmentation similar to what was witnessed during the 2023 general elections.
With the 2027 race gradually taking shape, the latest development signals a shifting political landscape, as key opposition figures reposition themselves in search of a stronger and more stable platform.
