The Federal Government has approved a major overhaul of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), extending the orientation programme for prospective corps members from three weeks to six weeks as part of the most comprehensive reform of the scheme since its establishment over five decades ago.
The landmark decision was approved by the Federal Executive Council (FEC) and announced by the Minister of Youth Development, Olawande Ayodele, who described the reform as a bold step toward preparing Nigerian youths for the demands of a rapidly changing economy.
According to the minister, the newly redesigned six-week orientation camp will place greater emphasis on leadership development, entrepreneurship, digital skills, innovation, and specialised career training, equipping corps members with practical knowledge beyond the traditional orientation exercises.
Ayodele stated that the reforms are designed to transform the NYSC into a modern, skills-driven institution that supports President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s vision of building a $1 trillion Nigerian economy.
Beyond the extension of the orientation programme, the Federal Government also approved several key changes to the NYSC scheme, including:
- A technology-driven call-up process.
- Risk-sensitive deployment of corps members based on security considerations.
- Skills-based primary assignments aligned with graduates’ academic qualifications and career interests.
- Introduction of civilian operational leadership, while the military will continue providing security support.
- Improved orientation camp standards through a national grading and certification system.
- Replacement of the traditional Passing Out Parade with a new graduation ceremony.
- Introduction of redesigned NYSC uniforms to reflect professionalism and national pride.
The minister disclosed that the reform process began in 2025 following extensive consultations involving the Federal Ministry of Youth Development, the Federal Ministry of Education, and the Office of the Special Adviser to the President on Policy and Coordination.
To ensure full implementation, the Federal Executive Council has directed the Attorney-General of the Federation and the Federal Ministry of Youth Development to commence amendments to the NYSC Act and other relevant regulations.
Describing the initiative as a significant investment in Nigeria’s future, Ayodele said the reforms will make the NYSC more relevant, impactful, and responsive to the nation’s developmental needs.
The new policy marks the first holistic review of the NYSC since the scheme was established 53 years ago and is expected to reshape the experience of future corps members across the country.
