The Nigeria Police Force has commenced an investigation into a yet-to-be-identified police officer captured in a viral video allegedly drinking from a bottle believed to contain alcohol while carrying out a stop-and-search operation.
The video, which has generated widespread reactions across social media platforms, shows the officer engaging with occupants of a vehicle parked by the roadside while repeatedly taking drinks from the bottle during the encounter.
In the footage, the officer is also heard calling out figures as one of the vehicle occupants operates a mobile phone, prompting allegations from members of the public that financial solicitation may have occurred during the interaction.
The incident has sparked public outrage, with many Nigerians expressing concern over the officer’s conduct and demanding disciplinary action if the allegations are confirmed.
Reacting to the controversy, the Nigeria Police Force acknowledged awareness of the viral video and confirmed that efforts are underway to identify the officer involved and establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
In a statement posted on X, the Force Public Relations Department, through its New Media Officer, Aliyu Giwa, said the police leadership is treating the matter seriously.
“The Force leadership is aware of a viral video that appears to show a police officer allegedly soliciting financial gratification and drinking from a bottle believed to contain alcohol while interacting with vehicle occupants,” the statement read.
The police further stated that investigators are working to identify the officer, determine the exact location of the incident, and clarify all issues raised by the video.
“The Force assures the public that appropriate action will follow the outcome of the inquiry,” the statement added.
The Nigeria Police Force reiterated its commitment to professionalism, accountability, and maintaining public trust, assuring Nigerians that any misconduct established through the investigation will be addressed in accordance with existing regulations.
