ABUJA, Nigeria — The Federal Government has approved a major restructuring of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), replacing military operational leadership with civilian leadership in what is being described as the most significant reform of the scheme since its establishment in 1973.
The landmark decision was approved by the Federal Executive Council (FEC) as part of the first comprehensive review of the NYSC in its 53-year history.
Under the new arrangement, a civilian will oversee the operational leadership of the NYSC, while the Nigerian military will continue to provide security for corps members during orientation camps and throughout their service year.
To implement the reforms, the Federal Executive Council directed the Attorney-General of the Federation and the Federal Ministry of Youth to amend the NYSC Act and relevant regulations to reflect the new framework.
The reform marks a significant departure from the long-standing tradition of military leadership at the NYSC, which is currently headed by Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu.
According to the Federal Government, the restructuring is aimed at transforming the NYSC into a more skill-oriented, productivity-driven, and youth-empowering institution capable of contributing more effectively to national development.
Officials also stated that the new direction aligns with the administration’s broader economic vision of building a $1 trillion economy by equipping young Nigerians with practical skills, entrepreneurship opportunities, and increased productivity.
Despite the leadership transition, the military will continue to play a vital role in ensuring the safety and security of corps members across the country.
Established on May 22, 1973, following the Nigerian Civil War, the NYSC was created to promote national unity, reconciliation, and integration by deploying graduates to serve in states outside their regions of origin.
The latest reforms are expected to usher in a new era for the scheme, with greater emphasis on skills acquisition, entrepreneurship, innovation, and youth empowerment while maintaining the security framework provided by the armed forces.
