IFEWARA, OSUN STATE — The Nigerian Navy has reportedly arrested the All Progressives Congress (APC) House of Assembly candidate for Atakumosa East/West Local Government Area of Osun State, Hon. Babatunde Komolafe Festus, alongside other supporters, over alleged possession of a firearm.

Komolafe was reportedly apprehended on Thursday in his hometown of Ifewara while travelling in an APC campaign vehicle.

According to sources cited in the report, Navy personnel conducted a routine search of the vehicle and allegedly discovered a rifle inside.

A source reportedly said Komolafe and other supporters were travelling in a campaign vehicle associated with APC governorship candidate Bola Oyebamiji when they were stopped and searched.

A video circulating in connection with the incident reportedly shows Navy personnel with the apprehended individuals following the arrest.

The reported development comes just two days before the Osun State governorship election, scheduled for Saturday, August 15, 2026, amid heightened political tension and growing concerns over possible electoral violence, intimidation and the movement of firearms.

The arrest also comes against the backdrop of controversial remarks allegedly made by APC chieftain Mutali Adisa, the Seriki of Ikire, who reportedly warned residents who would not support Oyebamiji against attempting to cross a “gutter” in Ikire on election day.

The comment has attracted concerns among political observers and civil society groups, who have continued to call for peaceful conduct before, during and after the election.

Meanwhile, human rights lawyer and activist Deji Adeyanju has reportedly said that he and his colleagues petitioned the governments of the United States, United Kingdom and Canada over alleged threats linked to the Osun election, including calls for visa restrictions against Senator Francis Fadahunsi.

The reported arrest of Komolafe and the alleged discovery of a firearm have further intensified scrutiny of political activities and security preparations across Osun State ahead of Saturday’s poll.

SUNTV Global Channel will continue to monitor developments as security agencies and political stakeholders respond to the incident.

Note: The allegations of firearm possession and the circumstances surrounding the arrest remain allegations pending official confirmation and the outcome of any investigation.
