South African authorities have arrested Bellarmine Chatunga Mugabe, the son of Zimbabwe’s late former leader, following a shocking alleged shooting at a luxury residence in Hyde Park, Johannesburg.
According to police sources, the incident left a 23-year-old man, believed to be a gardener working at the property, critically injured after he was allegedly shot during a confrontation now being investigated as attempted murder.
Officers were seen thoroughly searching the upscale home, reportedly looking for the firearm suspected to have been used in the attack. The victim was rushed to hospital, where he remains in critical condition as of the latest update.
Police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi confirmed that two individuals were taken into custody for questioning while detectives work to piece together the circumstances surrounding the incident. Although authorities have not officially disclosed the suspect’s identity, journalists at the scene reported seeing Mugabe in handcuffs, and multiple local media outlets have since identified him as the primary suspect.
Bellarmine is the youngest son of Zimbabwe’s longtime ruler, Robert Mugabe, and his second wife, Grace Mugabe.
Robert Mugabe led Zimbabwe from independence in 1980 until he was forced from power in 2017 after 37 years in leadership. He died in 2019 at the age of 95 and remains one of Africa’s most controversial political figures.
Authorities say investigations are ongoing, and more details are expected as the case develops.
