A woman identified as the wife of an Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighter has surrendered to troops of Operation Hadin Kai in Borno State, arriving with her two-month-old baby after reportedly escaping from a terrorist enclave.
Security sources said the woman, identified as Falmata Bakwai, surrendered to soldiers of the 19 Brigade at Cross Kauwa in Kukawa Local Government Area on June 26.
During an initial debriefing, Bakwai reportedly told military personnel that she fled the ISWAP camp at Dogon Chuku while her husband and other fighters were away on an operation.
She said worsening conditions inside the camp, particularly severe shortages of food and other essential supplies, forced her to escape with her infant.
Military sources attributed the deteriorating conditions within the terrorist enclave to sustained ground offensives and airstrikes carried out by Nigerian troops and allied forces against insurgent strongholds across the North-East.
The woman and her baby have since been placed under quarantine and are receiving medical attention in line with military operational procedures.
Authorities confirmed that further debriefing is ongoing before she is transferred to the Headquarters of Sector 3, Operation Hadin Kai/Multinational Joint Task Force, where investigators will continue profiling and intelligence gathering.
Security officials believe the latest surrender reflects the increasing pressure being mounted on terrorist groups through coordinated military operations, which have disrupted their supply routes and weakened conditions inside several insurgent camps.
