A civil society organisation, the Centre for Reform and Public Advocacy (CFRPA), has filed a lawsuit before the Federal High Court in Kano seeking an order to disqualify President Bola Ahmed Tinubu from contesting the 2027 presidential election over alleged irregularities in his academic credentials.
According to court documents, the suit, marked FHC/K/CS/312/2026, lists President Tinubu, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and Chicago State University (CSU) as defendants.
In its filing, the group alleged that President Tinubu submitted a forged Chicago State University certificate and an invalid National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) discharge certificate to INEC during the 2023 presidential election process.
The plaintiff also questioned the President’s claimed secondary school education, alleging inconsistencies regarding his attendance at Government College, Lagos, and arguing that these issues affect his constitutional qualification to seek re-election.
The organisation further relied on academic records released by Chicago State University in 2023 following legal proceedings in the United States, claiming the documents contained discrepancies that require judicial review.
As part of the suit, the group is asking the court to declare the certificate allegedly submitted by President Tinubu invalid, compel INEC to disqualify him from participating in the 2027 presidential election, and restrain the electoral commission from accepting or recognising his candidacy.
The plaintiff also requested an order directing Chicago State University to remove Tinubu’s name from its alumni records, among other reliefs.
The lawsuit follows a petition reportedly submitted to INEC on June 19, 2026, requesting clarification on the President’s eligibility before the matter was taken to court.
As of the time of filing this report, President Bola Tinubu, the Presidency, INEC, and Chicago State University had not publicly responded to the fresh legal action.
The case is expected to attract significant public attention as legal proceedings continue. The allegations contained in the suit remain before the court and have not been determined by any judicial ruling.
