A petrol-laden tanker has gone up in flames along the Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe Western Bypass in Minna, Niger State, forcing both federal and state firefighters to withdraw from the scene due to a lack of adequate water and firefighting chemicals, SUNTV Global Channel has learnt.
The incident occurred near Mandela Junction, close to the National Examinations Council (NECO) office, and not far from the Niger State House of Assembly and the state secretariat, raising serious safety concerns in the area.
According to information gathered, the tanker—loaded with Premium Motor Spirit (PMS)—was leaving the NNPC Mega Station when it suddenly caught fire. Sources said the driver managed to drive the burning tanker out of the filling station before it eventually overturned and spilled fuel across the roadway.
Emergency responders from both federal and state fire services reportedly arrived at the scene but later vacated the area, citing insufficient water supply and chemicals as the inferno intensified.
“The situation became uncontrollable due to lack of resources,” a source familiar with the operation told SUNTV Global Channel.
The tanker driver reportedly sustained partial injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital for medical attention. His condition is said to be stable.
As of the time of filing this report, the exact cause of the fire remains unknown, while residents and motorists have been advised to avoid the area as authorities work to prevent further escalation.
