Human rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Femi Falana, has petitioned the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), calling for an immediate investigation into the alleged issuance of a Nigerian passport to a woman currently facing multiple criminal charges.
In the petition, Falana requested a comprehensive and independent probe into the circumstances surrounding the issuance of Passport No. B51450551 to Rebecca Omokamo Godwin-Isaac, who is standing trial in separate criminal cases before the Federal High Court in Abuja and the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory.
According to the petition, Falana argued that the alleged issuance of a new passport is a matter of national concern, particularly because the suspect’s previous international passport had reportedly been surrendered to authorities as part of ongoing court proceedings.
The senior lawyer urged the Minister of Interior to preserve all records relating to the passport application, including biometric data, supporting documents, approval logs, audit trails, electronic records, and other relevant information required for a full forensic investigation.
Falana further requested that authorities determine whether all legal and administrative procedures were followed before the passport was approved and issued. He also called for the identification of every official involved in processing, approving, or facilitating the passport application.
In a separate petition to the ICPC, Falana asked the anti-corruption agency to investigate whether due process was followed during the biometric enrolment process and to conduct a forensic examination of the signature appearing on the passport’s data page to determine its authenticity.
According to the petition, the criminal cases against Godwin-Isaac involve allegations of document forgery, fraudulent land transactions, obtaining by false pretence, fraudulent misrepresentation, and other related offences involving assets reportedly worth billions of naira.
Falana maintained that the matter extends beyond the interest of his client, describing it as an issue affecting the integrity of Nigeria’s passport system, national security, public confidence in the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), and the rule of law.
As of the time of filing this report, the Ministry of Interior, the Nigeria Immigration Service, the ICPC, and the suspect had not publicly responded to the allegations contained in the petition.
