In a shocking turn of events, the Delta State Police Command has rescued a two-month-old baby boy who was allegedly sold by his mother to a pastor in Agbarho, Delta State, following swift police intervention.
The rescue was confirmed on Thursday by the Executive Assistant to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori on Security, Engr. Emmanuel Udoka Chika-dibia, who praised the prompt response of the police in what was initially reported as a case of child abduction.
According to Chika-dibia, the case was first reported at the Ekpan Police Division as a possible abduction. The Divisional Police Officer, CSP Joseph Labe, immediately deployed officers to comb Uvwie and surrounding areas of Warri in search of the missing infant.
However, preliminary interactions with the baby’s mother raised suspicion due to inconsistencies in her story and her unusual behavior. Security operatives then advised her husband to independently verify her claims regarding the child’s disappearance.
The investigation took a dramatic turn when the husband accompanied his wife to take an oath of innocence. During the process, she allegedly confessed to selling the infant to a pastor in Agbarho. Following the confession, both were taken to the police station for further questioning.
The mother subsequently led police to a church in Agbarho, where the baby was safely recovered. “As a result of the operation, the pastor and his wife have been arrested, and the baby boy has been successfully rescued,” Chika-dibia confirmed.
The Delta State Police Command has launched a full-scale investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the alleged sale and to identify any other individuals involved.
Chika-dibia also acknowledged the crucial role of the Agbarho community, particularly the President General, in supporting the operation, noting that community cooperation was vital to the successful rescue.
