A prominent political figure in Zamfara State, Hon. Mu’azu Zannan Gwashi, has been killed by bandits after spending five agonizing months in captivity, despite the criminals collecting a ₦15 million ransom from his family.
The tragedy began on July 22, 2025, when armed bandits ambushed vehicles along the Manyaci–Bukkuyum road, opening fire and targeting political leaders. During the attack, the Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Bukkuyum LGA, Hon. Muhammad Sala Wuta, was shot in the hand and leg. Three others— including Gwashi — were abducted.
Initially, the abductors demanded a ₦30 million ransom and warned the community it may take months before Gwashi would be released. Negotiations later forced the demand down to ₦15 million. However, after receiving the ₦15 million, the bandits refused to free him, insisting the remaining ₦15 million must still be paid.
Security analyst Malam Bakatsine, commenting on X, described the ordeal as “a tragic end to a long cycle of shifting ransom demands.” He lamented how communities continue to suffer extortion and heartbreaking loss.
Local residents, friends, and colleagues have taken to social media to mourn Gwashi, praising him as a committed community leader whose life was cut short by insecurity that has plagued Zamfara for years.
Bandit attacks remain frequent across the state, especially on rural roads and highways in areas such as Bukkuyum, Gusau, Maradun, and Shinkafi. Despite ongoing military and police operations, killings and kidnappings continue to surge, leaving communities in fear and despair.
