A group identified as Concerned Citizens has petitioned the , demanding an urgent investigation into alleged violence-inciting remarks made by , a member of the representing Nganzai Local Government Area.
The controversy followed the emergence of a viral video allegedly showing the lawmaker making threatening statements against perceived political opponents ahead of future elections in Borno State.
According to translations independently carried out by a Kanuri language speaker, the lawmaker allegedly declared during a gathering that political victories would be secured even if opponents had to be “killed and buried.”
The translated remarks reportedly referenced political figures in Marte, Monguno, and Nganzai Local Government Areas.
The petitioners accused Gajiram, who also serves as Chairman of the House Committee on Justice and Judiciary, of making comments capable of inciting violence, intimidation, and political unrest in the state.
According to the petition addressed to the Director-General of the DSS in Abuja, the alleged statements were interpreted by many as direct threats against individuals perceived as obstacles to the lawmaker’s political ambitions and re-election plans.
The group described the remarks as disturbing and dangerous, especially considering the fragile security situation in the North-East region which has battled insurgency and terrorism for years.
“At a time when Borno State and the North-East region continue to recover from years of insurgency, terrorism, and insecurity, any statement capable of inciting political violence or encouraging attacks against citizens must be treated with utmost seriousness,” part of the petition read.
The petitioners stressed that public office holders are expected to promote peace, democratic values, and lawful political engagement rather than make statements capable of creating fear or encouraging violence.
The group further argued that the Nigerian Constitution, Electoral Act, Penal Code, and other relevant laws prohibit threats, hate speech, and conduct capable of breaching public peace.
They therefore called on the DSS and other security agencies to conduct what they described as a thorough and impartial investigation into the incident.
Among their demands, the petitioners urged security authorities to retrieve and subject all related audio, video, and electronic evidence to forensic examination while inviting everyone connected to the matter for questioning.
They also called for lawful action against anyone found culpable, regardless of political status or influence, including possible legal and electoral sanctions where applicable.
Copies of the petition were reportedly forwarded to the , , , the Nigerian Bar Association, civil society organisations, and members of the press.
