Suspected Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighters have killed a member of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) during a deadly ambush on a joint patrol in Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State.
Security sources told SUNTV Global Channel that the attack occurred at about 2:30pm on January 5, 2026, along the Warave–Bayan Dutse Road, a volatile axis that has continued to witness insurgent activity despite sustained counterinsurgency operations by security forces.
According to security analyst Zagazola Makama, who cited local sources, the insurgents opened fire on CJTF operatives and local hunters who were carrying out a routine patrol in the area.
One of the operatives, identified as Hamman Ibrahim, aged 40, sustained critical gunshot injuries during the ambush.
Following the attack, personnel from a nearby military Forward Operating Base immediately raised an alert, prompting the deployment of troops under Operation HADIN KAI, alongside police officers and other CJTF members, to the scene.
The wounded operative was evacuated to the General Hospital in Gwoza for urgent medical attention. However, hospital sources confirmed that Mr. Ibrahim was pronounced dead on arrival.
Authorities subsequently documented the incident before releasing the body of the deceased to his family for burial in accordance with Islamic rites.
The latest attack highlights the lingering security challenges in parts of southern Borno State, where CJTF operatives and local vigilante groups continue to play a critical support role for the military in the fight against Boko Haram and ISWAP insurgents.
