Former United States Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, has strongly rejected claims by President Donald Trump that he supported a military strike against Iran, insisting his position has been misrepresented.
In a statement shared on Friday, Blinken clarified that he never endorsed any such action, directly countering Trump’s assertion that he had backed the idea during the administration of Joe Biden.
“President Trump cited me as supporting his attack on Iran… except I didn’t,” Blinken stated, stressing that his views had been taken out of context.
He went further to criticise Trump’s decision to withdraw the United States from the 2015 nuclear agreement, formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), describing it as a major strategic mistake.
According to Blinken, the deal—negotiated under former President Barack Obama—had successfully restricted Iran’s nuclear programme while allowing for strict international inspections.
“The Obama Administration put Iran’s nuclear program in a box. President Trump let it out,” he said, warning that abandoning the agreement without a replacement weakened diplomatic leverage and increased global security risks.
While acknowledging that recent military actions may have achieved some short-term objectives, Blinken questioned their long-term consequences, raising concerns about regional instability and the potential empowerment of hardliners in Tehran.
He also warned that Iran still retains significant nuclear capability, including enriched uranium and the means to rebuild its weapons programme over time.
Beyond security concerns, Blinken highlighted the human and economic costs of the conflict, revealing that American troops have already suffered casualties, with many more injured and billions of dollars being spent on the war effort.
He further cautioned that the situation could isolate the United States from key allies, while strengthening economic opportunities for rival nations.
Despite his criticism, Blinken emphasised that once U.S. forces are deployed, national unity is essential to ensure their safety and success on the battlefield.
Concluding his remarks, he made his stance unmistakably clear: “I would not have done it.”
The development has reignited debate in Washington over U.S. foreign policy, military intervention in the Middle East, and the long-term impact of abandoning diplomatic agreements.
