Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, has accused the President Bola Tinubu–led Federal Government of using state institutions to intimidate opposition figures, alleging that he has been unfairly linked to terrorism financing because of his refusal to defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Speaking during a public address on Wednesday, the governor reacted angrily to the arraignment of his Commissioner for Finance, Adamu, by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over alleged links to $9.7 million terrorism financing and separate money laundering allegations involving ₦5.79 billion.
Governor Mohammed described the situation as a dangerous politicisation of security and anti-graft agencies, warning that continued harassment of opposition leaders could heighten political tension in the country.
“I woke up to allegations that I, a sitting governor and opposition leader, am being accused of terrorism. My commissioner is being held by the EFCC and won’t be released,” Mohammed said.
He claimed that despite enjoying constitutional immunity, his name was recklessly mentioned in court filings without his knowledge.
“Even with my immunity, my name was dragged into a Nigerian court. Me, Bala Mohammed, referenced without my consent. Politics has become something else in Nigeria,” he added.
The governor further accused the Federal Government of neglecting Bauchi State in terms of infrastructure and security, while attempting to coerce him into joining the APC.
“The Federal Government retains about 51 percent of national resources, yet they have not constructed a single kilometre of road in Bauchi or provided water. Even security agencies are funded by my government, yet we are constantly harassed,” he said.
Mohammed also criticised the Federal Government’s proposed tax reforms, warning that they would further impoverish Nigerians and weaken state governments.
“Despite the obvious flaws, they insist on tax policies that will impoverish citizens and sub-nationals. This system must be reassessed,” he warned.
Highlighting Bauchi’s relative stability, the governor said peace in the state was achieved through community cooperation and inclusive governance, despite political diversity.
“There is no northern state with better security than Bauchi. APC, PDP, NNPP—we coexist peacefully. Intolerance is becoming too rampant at the federal level,” he stated.
In a strong warning, Mohammed accused the APC-led Federal Government of using the courts and agencies like the EFCC to persecute political opponents, stressing that he would not be intimidated.
“I will not allow anyone to criminalise me because I refuse to join their party. I will not join their party. My family members and officials have been detained without justification. If this continues, we may have no choice but to resist,” he said.
