Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has declared his willingness to step aside for any candidate that emerges as the presidential flagbearer of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), whether through consensus or a democratic primary.
Speaking during a Prime Time interview on Arise TV on Wednesday, Atiku said he is committed to supporting whoever the party selects as its candidate ahead of the next general election.
“I will step aside for any winner. If he is a contender, why not?” he said when asked if he would уступ for other aspirants, including former Anambra State governor Peter Obi.
Addressing concerns about Obi’s previous role as his running mate under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2019 election, Atiku dismissed suggestions that it could pose any obstacle.
“Why? What is difficult there? Well, I don’t know,” he responded.
Atiku emphasised that the ADC’s preferred approach is to reach a consensus among aspirants but noted that the party is prepared to conduct a transparent election if necessary.
“The first option would be to work out a consensus. If that doesn’t emerge, then we go for a direct election. I will support anybody who emerges,” he said.
Reaffirming his stance, he added, “We will aim at consensus. If we don’t get it, then we go for elections.”
His comments come amid ongoing political realignments, as opposition figures explore coalition strategies to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the next election cycle.
The development signals a potential shift in Atiku’s approach, positioning him as open to compromise as talks around opposition unity continue to gather momentum in Nigeria.
