The All Progressives Congress (APC) has suspended its planned ward, local government, and state congresses in Abia State, a decision that is fueling intense political speculation over a possible defection by Governor Alex Otti.
In an official letter dated February 18, 2026, and addressed to the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the APC National Working Committee confirmed the postponement, citing ongoing consultations and the need to complete administrative preparations.
The letter, signed by National Chairman Prof. Nentawe Goshwe Yilwatda and National Secretary Senator Surajudeen Ajibola Basiru, stated that the suspension was necessary to ensure a transparent and orderly congress process.
According to the party, a revised timetable will be announced after consultations are concluded, in line with the Electoral Act 2022 and regulations governing political parties.
Although the APC did not directly link its decision to any political realignment, insiders within the party in Abia suggest the move may be part of strategic planning ahead of potential high-profile defections.
Governor Otti, currently the only governor elected on the platform of the Labour Party, has not publicly confirmed any discussions about joining the ruling party. APC leaders have also remained silent on the speculation.
Political analysts say the timing of the suspension and the reference to “ongoing consultations” indicate internal negotiations may be underway that could reshape the party’s structure in the state.
In a related development, the APC has also halted its congresses in Adamawa State amid rumours that Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri of the Peoples Democratic Party may be considering a switch to the ruling party.
Observers note that if either governor defects, it could significantly alter political alignments ahead of the next election cycle.
For now, both situations remain unconfirmed, but the suspensions have already heightened political tension and speculation nationwide.
