At least two residents have been confirmed dead while several others sustained life-altering injuries following an alleged airstrike by a Nigerian military aircraft in Kurgi community, Mariga Local Government Area of Niger State.
SUNTV Global Channel gathered that the incident, which reportedly occurred on Sunday, January 25, 2026, involved an aircraft said to be operated by personnel of Operation Fansan Yamma, a military operation in the region. The attack triggered widespread panic, forcing many residents to flee their homes to neighbouring communities in search of safety.
According to local sources, the aircraft allegedly struck civilian areas, killing two people on the spot, amputating the limbs of at least three residents, and leaving six others with severe injuries. Victims were said to include both Muslims and Christians, heightening fears of indiscriminate targeting.
A community source alleged that the aircraft circled residential areas before launching attacks. “The aircraft moves around the community and attacks anyone it sees. It uses bombs and gunfire on innocent people,” the source claimed.
One of the victims, identified as a man who was reportedly seated in front of a church, was said to have attempted to flee after sighting the aircraft but was shot in the abdomen. He is currently receiving medical treatment, according to residents.
Eyewitnesses further alleged that the aircraft repeatedly flew low over the area, targeting civilians on the ground, a development that has left the community traumatised and largely deserted. Women and children were reportedly among those most affected, as families fled en masse to nearby towns.
Describing the incident as “shocking and unprovoked,” a local resident called on the Federal Government and military authorities to immediately investigate the allegations and provide urgent medical support to the injured victims.
As of the time of filing this report, the Nigerian Air Force has yet to release an official statement addressing the alleged airstrike.
