A Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Isah Abdullahi, attached to the armoury of the 12 Police Mobile Force (PMF) in Minna, Niger State, has allegedly taken his own life amid an investigation into the illegal sale of arms and ammunition to bandits.
The Niger State Police Command confirmed the incident in a statement issued by its spokesperson, SP Wasiu Abiodun, on Thursday.
According to the police, DSP Abdullahi was arrested on December 15, 2025, following intelligence reports linking him to the alleged unlawful sale of police arms and ammunition to criminal elements.
SP Abiodun disclosed that as part of ongoing investigations, the command conducted an arms audit on December 16, 2025, aimed at accounting for missing rifles and ammunition linked to the armoury.
“During the audit process, the suspect allegedly shot himself in the head with a pistol, resulting in his instant death,” the police spokesperson stated.
The command further revealed that officers assigned to supervise the audit and investigation have been arrested for negligence, for allegedly failing to prevent the suspect from accessing a firearm while in custody.
SP Abiodun added that other suspects connected to the case are currently undergoing investigation, as the police intensify efforts to unravel the circumstances surrounding the incident and the alleged arms diversion.
The Niger State Police Command assured the public that a thorough and transparent investigation will be carried out, and anyone found culpable will be dealt with in accordance with the law.
