A series of powerful explosions has struck Mehrabad International Airport in Tehran, sending thick plumes of smoke into the sky and triggering panic across parts of the Iranian capital early Saturday morning.
Eyewitnesses in western Tehran reported hearing multiple deafening blasts, followed by flames and heavy smoke rising from areas surrounding the airport.
Videos circulating on social media showed sections of the airport engulfed in fire, with aircraft reportedly burning on the tarmac. At the same time, air-defence systems were seen activating across the city as authorities responded to the unfolding situation.
Preliminary reports indicate the explosions may be connected to a wave of airstrikes targeting strategic locations in Tehran. Officials in Israel said the attacks were aimed at what they described as “high-priority targets” in the Iranian capital.
Iranian state media confirmed that a major explosion occurred in the western part of the city, while residents described several consecutive blasts that shook buildings and sent people rushing out of their homes.
Mehrabad International Airport, one of the busiest aviation hubs in Iran, handles both civilian and military flights and has previously been linked to incidents amid rising regional tensions.
Authorities have yet to provide full details about the extent of the damage or confirm whether there were casualties. Emergency services are reportedly working around the area as investigations continue.
