FIFA President Gianni Infantino has strongly condemned the conduct of some Senegalese players, officials, and supporters following chaotic scenes that overshadowed Sunday’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final between Senegal and host nation Morocco.
Although Senegal eventually secured a dramatic 1–0 victory after extra time, the final was plunged into controversy late in regulation time when several Senegal players walked off the pitch in protest over a penalty awarded to Morocco.
In a statement sent to AFP, Infantino described the incident as “unacceptable,” stressing that walking off the field and engaging in violence have no place in football.
“It is unacceptable to leave the field of play in this manner, and equally, violence cannot be tolerated in our sport,” Infantino said.
“Teams must always respect the decisions taken by match officials, whether on or off the pitch.”
What Happened
The match was locked at 0–0 deep into injury time when VAR advised the referee to award Morocco a penalty following a challenge on Brahim Díaz. The decision enraged Senegal’s players, many of whom temporarily abandoned the field in protest.
Earlier, Senegal had seen a goal ruled out for what appeared to be a soft foul, further fueling their anger.
Former Liverpool star Sadio Mané stood out amid the chaos, remaining on the pitch and urging his teammates to return so the game could continue.
The standoff caused a delay of nearly 20 minutes. When play resumed, Díaz attempted a delicate panenka penalty, but Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy produced a crucial save to keep his team in the contest.
Trouble in the Stands
The tension spilled into the stands, where some Senegalese supporters attempted to breach security and enter the pitch, leading to clashes with stewards and security personnel.
FIFA also condemned the behavior of unruly fans, warning that such actions damage the image of African football on the global stage.

Despite the turmoil, Senegal regrouped in extra time. In the fourth minute, Pape Gueye fired home a stunning goal that ultimately secured Senegal’s AFCON title in unforgettable — if controversial — fashion.
FIFA Warns of Consequences
While congratulating Morocco on a “fantastic tournament” and praising them as “exceptional hosts” ahead of their role as co-hosts of the 2030 FIFA World Cup, Infantino made it clear that disciplinary action may follow.
“The ugly scenes witnessed today must be condemned and never repeated,” he said.
“They send the wrong message to millions watching around the world. I expect CAF’s disciplinary bodies to take the appropriate measures.”
As global attention turns toward upcoming major tournaments, including the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America, FIFA says Sunday’s AFCON final must serve as a lesson on discipline, sportsmanship, and respect for the laws of the game.
