Nigeria’s opposition party, the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has strongly criticised the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over what it describes as worsening insecurity across the country, accusing the government of prioritising image management over the safety of Nigerians.
The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, made the remarks in a post on X (formerly Twitter), where he argued that spending millions of dollars on international lobbying cannot hide the realities facing citizens.
According to Abdullahi, the reported $9 million paid to lobbyists to improve Nigeria’s global image will not change what he called the harsh truth about rising violence and economic hardship in the country.
“You can pay lobbyists $9 million to repackage your image, but you cannot whitewash the facts,” Abdullahi wrote.
He claimed that Nigeria is witnessing one of the most difficult periods in its history, stating that terrorist-related killings have continued to rise under the current administration. He also argued that poverty levels have reached alarming heights, claiming that more than 135 million Nigerians are now living in poverty.
The ADC spokesperson pointed to recent attacks in several communities across the country, including deadly incidents in Kwara State and Katsina State, where armed groups reportedly killed dozens of civilians.
According to the opposition party, the continued attacks show that criminal groups and terrorists are still operating freely in many parts of Nigeria.
The party further questioned the effectiveness of the Federal Government’s security strategies, including previous declarations of security emergencies and plans to recruit thousands of additional police officers.
ADC leaders argued that the persistent violence exposes deeper weaknesses in Nigeria’s security system, particularly in intelligence gathering, border control, coordination among security agencies and rapid response to attacks.
The party therefore called on the Federal Government to be transparent about the true state of national security and present clear, practical measures to stop the killings.
ADC maintained that protecting lives and property remains the most fundamental duty of any government, warning that failure to guarantee citizens’ safety undermines public confidence in leadership.
