The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has strongly criticised the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Administration over the imposition of movement restrictions ahead of the FCT council elections, describing the decision as an attempt to discourage voter participation.
In a statement issued by its spokesperson, Bolaji Abdullahi, the party condemned the announcement of a curfew scheduled to begin at 8pm on Friday — nearly a full day before Saturday’s polls.
The party specifically faulted the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, for approving what it called a “premature and unnecessary restriction,” warning that such a move could negatively impact voter turnout.
According to the ADC, while limited movement restrictions on election day are sometimes necessary for security reasons, standard practice is for such measures to take effect from midnight on the day of voting — not the evening before.
The party argued that imposing an early curfew creates barriers for residents who may need to travel, prepare, or make arrangements to vote, thereby raising fears of voter suppression.
ADC leaders stressed that elections must be conducted in an environment that is not only secure but also visibly open, free, and accessible to all eligible voters.
They further warned that any action that restricts access to polling units or creates an atmosphere of intimidation could undermine public confidence in the credibility of the electoral process.
The party called on authorities to ensure that Abuja residents are able to move freely to their polling units, remain until voting concludes, and return home safely without harassment or obstruction.
The ADC also urged the FCT administration to review the timing of the curfew and align its actions with established electoral norms, insisting that protecting voters’ rights is essential for strengthening democracy in the territory and across Nigeria.
As preparations continue for the elections in Abuja, political parties and civil society groups say they are closely monitoring government directives to ensure transparency, fairness, and full electoral participation.
