The Accord Party has alleged that its House of Representatives candidate for the Ijesa South Federal Constituency in Osun State, Popoola Alaba, popularly known as Alabama, is being unlawfully detained by the Nigeria Police Force despite the absence of any formal petition or criminal evidence against him.
The allegation was made by the spokesperson of the Accord Party Governorship Campaign Council, Pelumi Olajengbesi, while reacting to Alaba’s continued detention following his arrest in Osun State and subsequent transfer to Abuja.
Speaking during an interview on Arise Television, Olajengbesi claimed that police officers handling the case informed the party that no petition had been filed against Alaba and that nothing incriminating was recovered from him. He further alleged that the detention was being carried out on the directive of the Inspector-General of Police.
According to party officials, Alaba was arrested in Osun State and later transferred to the Intelligence Response Team (IRT) office in Wuse Zone 7, Abuja. They also claimed that, as of the time of the statement, he had not been formally charged before any court.
Reports have suggested that Alaba may be under investigation over alleged illegal mining activities. However, no official charges have been publicly announced by the police.
The development has sparked political controversy, with the Adeleke Campaign Council describing the arrest as politically motivated. In a statement signed by the Chairman of its Media and Publicity Committee, Rep. Bamidele Salam, the council demanded the immediate and unconditional release of Alaba and three other Accord Party members.
The council alleged that the four politicians were arrested while attending a political meeting in Osun State and accused security operatives of disrupting the gathering and assaulting some party members during the operation.
It further claimed that the arrests were intended to prevent the Accord Party leaders from participating in political activities ahead of the election. The campaign also alleged that senior political and security figures were involved in planning the operation.
The council warned that the Osun State Police Command would be held responsible should any harm come to the detained politician while in custody.
As of the time of this report, the Nigeria Police Force has not publicly responded to the allegations or announced any formal charges against Popoola Alaba.
