The All Progressives Congress (APC) campaign council in Osun State has rejected the outcome of the August 15 governorship election, saying it will not immediately congratulate Governor Ademola Adeleke as it continues to review the results and conduct of the poll.
The Director-General of the APC governorship campaign, Oluwole Oke, disclosed this during an interview with Arise News on Monday evening.
Oke said the campaign council was conducting a detailed assessment of the election and would determine its next course of action after reviewing the results and relevant electoral documents.
According to him, the APC campaign team’s position is separate from that of President Bola Tinubu, who had congratulated Adeleke following the declaration by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
“We won’t be under any sort of pressure to easily reach out to congratulate Senator Ademola Adeleke,” Oke said.
The APC campaign DG also disputed INEC’s declaration, insisting that the party believes Adeleke did not secure the highest number of valid votes in the election.
“We do not agree with the declaration of INEC. That’s our position for now. We believe he did not score the highest valid votes,” Oke said.
The party has reportedly directed its agents to submit copies of relevant result sheets, including Forms EC8A, EC8B and EC8C, for a comprehensive review.
The APC Director of Media and Information, Kola Olabisi, said the party was examining results from all 332 wards across the state. He added that the party would consult its legal team and consider available legal options if the review reveals irregularities.
INEC declared Adeleke the winner after he polled 511,067 votes, defeating APC candidate Bola Oyebamiji, who scored 444,815 votes. Accord Party candidate Najeem Salaam came third with 17,180 votes.
Adeleke reportedly won 19 of Osun State’s 30 local government areas, while Oyebamiji won 11, leaving the incumbent with a margin of 66,252 votes.
Following his declaration as winner, Adeleke called on Oyebamiji to congratulate him.
The APC campaign council, however, said it would complete its review of the election before announcing its final position or deciding whether to challenge the result in court.
