The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State has rejected suggestions that the state’s governorship election is over, saying it is reviewing the results announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) before deciding on its next step.
The party said it may challenge the outcome in court if its review and legal consultations establish grounds to contest alleged irregularities during the electoral process.
The APC made its position known in a statement issued in Osogbo on Sunday by its spokesperson, Kola Olabisi.
According to the party, an election does not end with the announcement of results, arguing that political parties have constitutionally recognised avenues to seek redress when they believe an election was not conducted properly.
Olabisi said the APC would consult its legal team and consider all available legal options before making a final decision on whether to approach the election tribunal.
The party maintained that the electoral process extends from voter registration and party primaries through the election itself and, where necessary, to the tribunal, Court of Appeal and Supreme Court.
While reviewing the outcome, the APC commended its members and supporters for their commitment throughout the election and urged them to remain calm.
The party specifically appealed to its supporters not to respond to alleged provocations from members of opposing political groups.
The APC also called on the Nigeria Police Force to protect its members and supporters, alleging that some of its supporters had been subjected to harassment by individuals associated with the ruling party.
The party expressed confidence that justice would ultimately prevail, regardless of whether the matter is resolved through political or legal channels.
The development follows INEC’s declaration of incumbent Governor Ademola Adeleke as the winner of the Osun governorship election.
According to the figures cited in the report, Adeleke secured 511,067 votes, defeating APC candidate Bola Oyebanji, who polled 444,815 votes.
For now, the APC says it is studying the results and seeking legal advice before deciding whether to formally challenge Adeleke’s victory in court.
