OSUN ELECTION: APC GOVERNORS, CHIEFTAINS FACE ‘OLE’ CHANTS AS CONVOYS EXIT OSOGBO AFTER DEFEAT
Several All Progressives Congress (APC) governors and senior party chieftains reportedly left Osogbo, the Osun State capital, in convoys in the early hours of Sunday following the party’s defeat in the governorship election.
A video circulating after the election showed vehicles believed to be carrying APC leaders leaving the state, while some residents along the route were heard chanting “Ole”, the Yoruba word for “thieves,” as the convoys passed.
The development came shortly after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Ademola Adeleke of the Accord Party winner of the closely contested election.
Adeleke secured 511,067 votes, defeating the APC candidate, Bola Oyebamiji, who polled 444,815 votes.
The APC had deployed several governors and senior party officials to Osun during the campaign and voting period in support of its candidate.
The election was accompanied by allegations and counter-allegations from the two major political camps, including claims of intimidation, vote-buying and attempts to interfere with the electoral process.
Before the final results were announced, Adeleke had raised concerns over alleged attempts to disrupt the election and called on security agencies to protect the integrity of the voting and collation process.
Following his victory, Adeleke described the outcome as “a victory for democracy” and thanked Osun residents for renewing their confidence in his administration.
The governor also promised to accelerate development across the state, with a particular focus on transforming Osun from a predominantly civil-service-based economy into an industrial state.
Adeleke further called on Oyebamiji to accept the result and congratulate him, saying he expected his opponent to demonstrate sportsmanship after the election.
He also disclosed that President Bola Tinubu had called to congratulate him on his victory.
The election result has continued to generate reactions across Nigeria, with political leaders and citizens closely watching developments following Adeleke’s re-election.
