SPORTS — Nigeria’s Super Falcons have been eliminated from the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) after suffering a 1-0 defeat to arch-rivals Cameroon in their quarter-final encounter.
The defending champions saw their title defence come to an end following a tightly contested match in which Cameroon secured victory through a decisive free-kick goal.
The defeat also ended Nigeria’s hopes of earning an automatic qualification ticket for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil. Cameroon, by reaching the semi-finals, have secured direct qualification for the global tournament.
Despite several attempts to find an equaliser, the Super Falcons were unable to break through Cameroon’s defence as the Indomitable Lionesses held on to secure a historic victory.
Nigeria will now have to battle through the continental and intercontinental qualification play-offs for another chance to reach the 2027 Women’s World Cup.
The Super Falcons remain one of Africa’s most successful women’s football teams, having won a record 10 WAFCON titles since the competition became a major biennial tournament in 1998.
The loss marks a disappointing end to Nigeria’s campaign as the team now begins preparations for the difficult qualification route ahead.
