Dansadau, a commercial hub in Maru Local Government Area of Zamfara State, was thrown into chaos on Tuesday after an angry mob reportedly attacked a serving member of the House of Representatives during a visit to the town, accusing him of poor performance and neglect of his constituency.
Eyewitnesses told SUNTV Global Channel that the lawmaker, whose name is being withheld as investigations continue, had arrived in Dansadau for what aides described as a “routine constituency engagement.” However, the visit quickly turned violent as dozens of youths confronted him, chanting angry slogans and accusing him of failing to deliver basic projects, empowerment programmes, and effective representation since assuming office.
According to residents, tensions had been building for months over the worsening security situation, poor road infrastructure, lack of federal presence, and what locals described as “total abandonment” by their elected representative.
“We only see him during elections,” a youth leader in Dansadau told SUNTV Global Channel. “There are no jobs, no boreholes, no school support, nothing. When he came today, people were already angry.”
Videos circulating on social media show the visibly distressed lawmaker being beaten, dragged on the ground, and stripped of parts of his clothing before security operatives and local elders intervened to rescue him from the mob. The footage has since sparked widespread reactions across Zamfara State and beyond.
Sources said the lawmaker sustained injuries during the attack and was later rushed to a nearby medical facility for treatment. His condition was described as stable as of the time of filing this report.
The Zamfara State Police Command confirmed the incident, stating that officers were deployed to restore calm and prevent further violence.
In a brief statement, a police spokesperson said investigations had commenced to identify those involved in the attack, adding that while citizens have the right to express grievances, “taking the law into one’s hands will not be tolerated.”
Community leaders in Dansadau have also condemned the violence but insisted that the incident reflects deep frustration among residents.
“We do not support mob action,” a traditional leader said. “But the government must listen to the cries of the people. Hunger, insecurity, and neglect are pushing youths to the edge.”
As of press time, the lawmaker had not issued an official statement, but close associates said he was “shocked by the level of anger” and would “review his engagement with the constituency.”
The incident has renewed debate over accountability, representation, and the growing disconnect between elected officials and grassroots communities across Nigeria, particularly in conflict-hit states like Zamfara.
