ASABA, Delta State — A Federal High Court sitting in Asaba has ordered the remand of suspended Ukwuani Legislative Council member, Victor Chukwuemeke, at the Ogwashi-Uku Correctional Centre over alleged defamatory statements made during a television interview.
Chukwuemeke, who represented Ezhionum Ward before his suspension, is being prosecuted over comments he allegedly made during an interview on Arise Television, where he accused members of the judiciary of accepting bribes to deliver a favorable judgment in a case involving the Chairman of Ukwuani Local Government Area.
He also allegedly claimed that former Delta State Governor, Dr. Ifeanyi Arthur Okowa, influenced the judge who presided over the matter.
According to the prosecution, the suspended councillor further alleged that the local government chairman diverted public funds meant for council development to settle debts allegedly linked to the former governor. He also claimed that council resources were being used to finance members of the chairman’s family.
The allegations reportedly prompted a petition, leading to an investigation by the Nigeria Police Force and Chukwuemeke’s subsequent arraignment before the Federal High Court.
At the resumed hearing, the prosecution informed the court that it was ready to commence trial and urged the court to reject the defendant’s application for bail.
After considering arguments from both the prosecution and the defence, the presiding judge declined the bail application and ordered that Chukwuemeke be remanded at the Ogwashi-Uku Correctional Centre pending trial.
The matter has been adjourned until September 22, 2026, when the trial is expected to begin.
The prosecution maintains that the statements allegedly made by the suspended councillor were defamatory and caused reputational harm to those mentioned. The allegations remain before the court, and the defendant is entitled to the presumption of innocence until proven guilty.
