A police inspector is receiving treatment for severe facial injuries after he was allegedly shot by a fellow officer following a disagreement at the Iju Police Division in Lagos State.
The incident reportedly occurred at about 9:00 a.m. on Sunday shortly after Inspector Aminu Nuhu completed his night guard duty and began handing over responsibilities to Police Constable Lateef Afeez, who had resumed for the morning shift.
According to information obtained from police sources, an argument between the two officers escalated into a violent confrontation. During the altercation, the inspector allegedly threw stones at the constable, prompting a retaliation that ended in gunfire.
Authorities said Constable Afeez allegedly fired a riot gun assigned to him for guard duty at close range, striking Inspector Nuhu in the face and causing serious injuries to his mouth and right cheek.
The wounded officer was immediately taken to General Hospital, Ifako, for emergency treatment before being transferred to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Ikeja, due to the severity of his condition.
Following the incident, police authorities arrested and disarmed the constable, who remains in custody pending further investigation.
The case is expected to be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Panti, Yaba, where detectives will conduct a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
Police officials have assured the public that additional information will be released as the investigation progresses.
The shocking incident has raised concerns about discipline and conflict management within the police force, as authorities work to establish the events that led to the violent confrontation.
