The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has taken the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to the Federal High Court in Abuja over allegations that governors elected under the All Progressives Congress (APC) diverted about N800 billion in public funds to support President Bola Tinubu’s anticipated 2027 re-election campaign.
The lawsuit, filed under suit number FHC/ABJ/CS/1426/2026, seeks an order compelling INEC to investigate claims that APC governors allegedly made monthly contributions from their Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) allocations into a special political campaign fund.
SERAP is also asking the court to direct the electoral body to obtain full details of the alleged contributions, including the identities of donors and the legal sources of the funds.
According to the organisation, the allegations raise serious questions about transparency, accountability and the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral process ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The rights group argued that the alleged use of public resources for political purposes could undermine public trust and distort democratic competition if proven to be true.
SERAP further maintained that INEC has the constitutional responsibility to regulate campaign financing, ensure compliance with the Electoral Act and sanction any violations involving political parties and candidates.
The organisation warned that weak oversight and a lack of transparency in political funding could threaten the credibility of future elections and weaken confidence in democratic institutions.
The suit also cites provisions of the Nigerian Constitution, anti-corruption laws and international agreements requiring transparency and accountability in the management of public resources.
No date has been fixed for the hearing of the case.
