The Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) has announced the dismissal of national team head coach Pape Thiaw and his entire coaching staff following the country’s disappointing campaign at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The decision was confirmed in a statement released by the federation on Sunday after an executive committee meeting.
According to the statement, the federation resolved to begin the process of relieving Thiaw and his coaching crew of their duties after Senegal’s early exit from the tournament.
FSF President Abdoulaye Fall is expected to address a press conference on Monday, where he will explain the reasons behind the decision and outline the federation’s plans for the future of the national team.
Thiaw, 45, a former Senegal international, was appointed head coach in 2024 and now joins the growing list of managers who have lost their positions following disappointing performances at the World Cup.
Senegal’s campaign got off to a difficult start, with defeats to France and Norway during the group stage. Although the Lions of Teranga recorded an impressive 5–0 victory over Iraq to advance to the knockout stage, their hopes of progressing further were dashed in dramatic fashion.
The West African side surrendered a two-goal lead against Belgium after leading 2–0 until the closing stages of the match. Belgium fought back to level the score before securing a 3–2 victory after extra time.
Thiaw’s dismissal comes only months after he guided Senegal to the final of the Africa Cup of Nations in January. However, the achievement was overshadowed by controversy after the team walked off the pitch during the final against Morocco.
Following the incident, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) stripped Senegal of the title, increasing scrutiny on both the coach and the national team.
The Senegalese Football Federation is expected to announce a replacement in the coming weeks as preparations begin for future international competitions.
