President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has welcomed the successful rescue of schoolchildren and teachers abducted from Oriire community in Ogbomoso, Oyo State, stating that no ransom was paid to secure their freedom.
According to a statement issued by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the victims were rescued after spending 56 days in captivity through a coordinated operation involving the Nigerian military, the Department of State Services (DSS), and the Nigeria Police Force.
The Presidency disclosed that the intelligence-led operation resulted in the arrest of eight suspected kidnappers, while several others were neutralised during the rescue mission. The suspects are currently in the custody of the DSS.
Onanuga also stated that the kidnappers had reportedly demanded the release of one of their leaders as part of negotiations, but the request was rejected. According to the Presidency, the suspect remains in custody and is being prosecuted, while no form of ransom or exchange was made to secure the victims’ release.
President Tinubu praised the dedication of the security agencies, saying their sustained efforts ensured the safe rescue of the pupils and teachers without casualties among the hostages.
The President also sympathised with the rescued victims and their families over the trauma they endured during the prolonged period of captivity.
He commended the Oyo State Government for its collaboration with federal security agencies throughout the rescue operation and urged authorities to strengthen security around schools to prevent similar incidents.
Tinubu further directed relevant emergency response agencies to work with the Oyo State Government to provide immediate medical care, psychological support, and other necessary assistance to the rescued pupils and teachers.
The President reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to bringing all those responsible for the abduction to justice and also extended condolences to the family of Mr. Oyedokun, who was reportedly killed during the hostage ordeal.
