The Argentine Football Association (AFA) is reportedly under preliminary scrutiny by the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) over alleged financial transactions valued at approximately $300 million, according to reports from Argentina.
The development comes as Argentina celebrates its dramatic 3-2 victory over Egypt in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, a match that was overshadowed by controversy surrounding several Video Assistant Referee (VAR) decisions.
Following the defeat, Egypt’s head coach, Hossam Hassan, questioned the fairness of the officiating, while some players expressed frustration over key decisions during the match. However, no official evidence has been presented to support claims that the tournament was manipulated.
Away from the football pitch, reports indicate that U.S. authorities have launched a preliminary review into the AFA’s financial activities, focusing on sponsorship and commercial transactions conducted during the administration of AFA President Claudio “Chiqui” Tapia.
According to the reports, federal prosecutors are examining whether any of the financial transactions fall under U.S. jurisdiction and could involve offences such as money laundering or fraud.
Investigators are also said to be reviewing commercial agreements involving TourProdEnter LLC, a company that reportedly managed sponsorship and commercial revenues on behalf of the Argentine Football Association.
The reported review includes transactions worth about $260 million, while investigators are also examining an additional $57 million in payments that allegedly lack sufficient documentation explaining their purpose.
Reports further claim that investigators have interviewed individuals believed to have knowledge of the financial dealings and are seeking additional witnesses as part of the preliminary assessment.
Despite the allegations, no criminal charges have been filed against the Argentine Football Association, its officials, or any of the individuals mentioned in the reports.
As of the time of filing this report, neither the FBI nor the Argentine Football Association has issued an official statement regarding the reported investigation.
The matter remains at the preliminary inquiry stage, and authorities have not announced whether a formal criminal investigation will be opened.
