U.S. President Donald Trump has claimed that recent American military strikes in Nigeria significantly reduced the mass killings of Christians by terrorist groups, saying the operations dealt a major blow to the insurgents’ leadership.
Speaking during a live event on Saturday, Trump said the U.S. military carried out targeted strikes that forced the terrorists to retreat after three of their top leaders were reportedly killed.
According to Trump, the operation disrupted attacks on Christian communities, which he said had suffered years of deadly violence, with thousands of men, women, and children reportedly killed by terrorists.
The U.S. president stated that his administration remains committed to using military force against terrorist groups threatening religious communities around the world, adding that American forces would continue tracking and targeting extremist leaders wherever they operate.
Trump also compared the operation to recent U.S. military actions against Iran, saying his administration would continue taking what it considers decisive action against major security threats.
However, Trump did not identify the specific terrorist group targeted or disclose the exact locations in Nigeria where the reported military strikes took place.
His remarks came a day after the United States reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening security cooperation with Nigeria. During a visit to Maiduguri, the Commander of the U.S. Special Operations Command Africa (SOCAFRICA), Major General Claude Tudor, pledged continued collaboration with Nigerian security forces in the fight against terrorism and insurgency.
Trump’s claims have drawn attention as Nigeria continues to battle insurgency and other security challenges across several parts of the country.
