The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Tunji Disu, has ordered an immediate crackdown on political violence and killings in Osun State, deploying the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of the South-West, Adegoke Fayoade, to restore peace ahead of the state’s forthcoming governorship election.

Speaking after a closed-door meeting with Governor Ademola Adeleke at the Government House in Osogbo on Friday, DIG Fayoade said the IGP had directed the Osun State Police Command to intensify security operations, investigate all reported cases of political violence, and ensure those responsible are arrested and prosecuted.

According to him, the police have been instructed to prevent any further acts of murder, brigandage or political violence capable of creating fear among residents.

Fayoade assured the governor that security agencies would work to guarantee a peaceful, free and credible governorship election, adding that police officers across the state had been directed to restrategize and strengthen security operations.

He also disclosed that he visited the Ataoja of Osogbo to reassure the traditional ruler that security agencies were taking decisive steps to tackle the growing threats posed by political thugs, bandits and other criminal elements.

Responding, Governor Adeleke welcomed the intervention by the police leadership but insisted that peace would only be achieved if those behind recent killings and violent attacks were arrested and prosecuted.

The governor accused some police officers in the state of failing to act against known political thugs, alleging that certain officers had collaborated with criminal elements while several political killings remained unresolved.

Adeleke cited the recent killings in Ikire, Ilobu and Esa Oke, claiming that no arrests had been made despite the incidents. He urged the police leadership to ensure impartial law enforcement and restore public confidence ahead of the election.

The IGP’s intervention comes amid rising political tension and growing security concerns in Osun State, with authorities promising stronger security measures to safeguard lives, maintain law and order, and ensure a peaceful electoral process.
